Decide How Hard Your Prepared To Work To Get Free Traffic

If you don’t want to or cannot afford to buy traffic then your own left with getting free traffic. To get free website traffic you need to work pretty hard as there are no short cuts. Getting real free traffic to your site or blog isn’t going to happen overnight.

In this guide I will explain some valid forms of how to get traffic to your website. I will also explain which methods are best to get free traffic and how to put them into practice for yourself. It will be how hard you work and which methods you use that will ultimately decide whether you get free traffic.

So work hard and the rest will fall into place.

Website Traffic Exchange Platforms – The Safe Ones!

There are 2 types of traffic exchange platforms. I have spoken about the unsafe free traffic exchange systems already on another post. This time I’m going to focus on the safe ones, list a few and explain how they work.

A safe traffic exchange site is one that offers targeted free traffic. It’s this difference that separates safe from unsafe traffic exchanges. Safe traffic exchanges include banner exchanges (not all) and widget exchanges. Banner exchanges and widget exchanges work very similar.

By placing ad code on your site you earn credits each time someone views your site. You use these credits when your ad code is viewed or clicked on. Below I will list 1 of each as examples.

  1. – This is a classic example of a banner exchange site. If you are looking for free traffic to your website or blog. This kind of traffic can be OK but there is definitely much better free traffic sources than these. Your chances of converting this traffic probably less than 1% – 3%.
  2. – This is a classic example of what I call a widget exchange. I believe this kind of traffic exchange is OK with PPC’s like Adsense. This is likely because they are passing targeted or contextual content.

You may get free traffic from these sites and possibly even quickly. There are actually many examples of both of these types of sites. But my honest advice is they aren’t really worth it. Banner exchanges don’t really get many clicks and can be expensive. Zergnet is free but unless you run a high traffic site it’s not likely to help get started. These can be against the TOS or PPC like Adsense – you’ve been warned!

Social BookMarking Sites For Free Website Traffic

With social bookmarking sites people save links to web pages that they like or want to share, using a social bookmarking site to store these links. These bookmarks are often public, and can be viewed by other members of the social bookmarking site where they are stored. Below are  some examples of social bookmarking sites.

  1. – An American based social news aggregation site. Users bookmark website content, share, rate and discuss it in a forum style layout. People who are registered community members can submit content such as text posts & direct links.
  2. – StumbleUpon is an cross blend of social bookmarking, voting, networking, web surfing, & blogging. StumbleUpon can send some real large amounts of free traffic with its huge user base of around 3 million users.

Social bookmarking websites like the ones listed above can bring you loads of free traffic! There are literally hundreds if not thousands of social bookmarking sites.

Doing Joint Ventures To Get Free Traffic To Your Website.

Getting free traffic from joint ventures is another brilliant way to get visitors to your site. Joint ventures can be done in a variety of ways. A common form of joint venture between bloggers is guest blogging. Not many bloggers quite realize this is what they are doing they’ve just read somewhere about guest posting and decided to do it. Not many bloggers truly realize how to maximize this kind of free traffic generation system.

Here are some tips to get the most from joint ventures.

  1. Find website owners who in the same industry as you but not in direct competition. If your product or service compliments theirs they will be more likely to agree to work with you.
  2. Don’t over complicate your offer to do a joint venture. High light the benefits of working with you, show them your product or service. Make them an irresistible offer they can’t refuse but don’t make promises on offers you can’t keep!
  3. Don’t get distracted by doing anything or anyone else during your joint venture. Stay focused and promote your joint venture where ever possible. For example if you have co-authored a paper then promote that paper both online and offline. Link to it, share it and bookmark it.
  4. Even though this defeats the purpose of getting free traffic but if you can afford it even pay for some traffic to your joint venture. $5 worth of ads on Facebook isn’t going to break the bank!

Using Social Media Websites To Get Free Website Traffic

Social media websites are some of the best sources of free targeted website traffic! These include Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and so forth. By creating informative and interesting content on your site and sharing it to social media you will get instant traffic! If you use WordPress then installing the JetPack plugin will enable this to be done automatically. Ensure that when your content is shared that it’s optimized for each social media website.

Using SEO Or Search Engine Optimization To Get Free Website Traffic

Search engine optimization is one of my favorites for free website traffic. By taking some steps when first building your website and while writing content for it you can ensure a long term traffic strategy. By doing what’s called “On Page Optimization” you are doing the minimum need to rank. By doing what’s called “Off Page Optimization” you are building links and visibility to your site. Both sides of SEO should be addressed for the best results.  A combination of SEO & Social Media is necessary for a proper and well rounded SEO campaign.

Forum Posting To Get Free Website Traffic

Posting in forums to get free website traffic. This method is pretty easy to do, simply find forums related to your niche and join them. When the opportunity to get involved in a conversation arises be ready. To be ready you need to have your “signature” done. Go into your profile settings to edit your signature. Many forums have different rules for editing your signature so make sure you check them out. In your signature ensure you have a link to your site either as a banner or just a link whichever is allowed.

Every time you reply to a hot topic you will have people checking out your signature and clicking through to your site. You can use this method to increase the visibility of your posts or even be ready with a landing page. Forum posting to increase your website traffic also helps with back links to your site. This helps increase your sites authority which is an SEO strategy many professional’s use!

Using Press Releases To Get Free Website Traffic

This is a common tactic used by many large marketing firms. Typically you write a press release about a new product or service you are about to offer. This press release should include information about your product, how it helps people or fills a need and where they can get it. Once you have written your press release you need to submit it. You can submit to some free news sites like the ones I have listed below, these can end up in mainstream media outlets!

  1. Press Release From
  2. Press Release From

The idea is that the press release gets picked up and syndicated taking your link with it. The more times your press release gets syndicated the more readers that can click through to your site. This has many of the same benefits of forum posting without all the posting!

Other Resources For Getting Free Website Traffic

You can put a combination and variation of the above listed resources. or that and to help show you what I mean  I have written about a technique called SEO Arrows. This teaches you a way of mixing some of the above to create free website traffic. You can also learn about Social SEO Arrows and learn basic SEO by following this guide on SEO traffic generation.

  • Hi Richard,
Lots of great ideas for getting free traffic. I had used the social media bookmarking sites for a long time and then got away from using them. I should have done a few press releases for my recent virtual summits but I got so busy with all the work involved in creating and hosting it that I had very little time left for additional marketing. I did use the power of affiliates, all the speakers on the event agreeing to share about it. My SEO on my page and outside could still be improved. Now that my summits are over, I plan to focus on improving my SEO on my web sites and participating in more groups and forums. I am a member of many but rarely have time to spend time there sharing.

Traffic is the something which every blogger is looking for. I like the idea of joint venture to boost the blog traffic. Ranking high in Google search results is also a good way to get traffic.

    Hi Janice,

Sorry at this point I can’t as I’m not able to find one. Reddit and it’s users have this strong opposition to any form of self promotion, posting a link from your blog can get you ostracized – lol – the best way to get on there that I’ve noticed to date is to write a post that gets shared by an established user.

Hi Ruth – your welcome 🙂
